All About Elijah

The Evolution of Judaism's Most Famous Prophet

4 Thursdays at 1:00 p.m. ET

March 5 - 26

All classes will be recorded and sent to registrants.

You may only know his name from the Passover seder — Elijah the prophet whom we leave out a glass of wine for, hoping he will join our festive meal.
But who was Elijah, really? The answer: A really big deal.

The biblical prophet Elijah is a central figure in Jewish folklore, which is riddled with stories of his roaming the earth, performing miracles and providing spiritual and physical healing. The Talmud features many tales of ancient rabbis encountering Elijah, who weighs in on their legal conversations, answers questions, gives advice and reports what is going on in heaven.

In this special new My Jewish Learning online course, we will get to know Elijah, through text, ritual, story and theology.

Rabbi Barbara Symons will discuss how his life was recorded in Jewish sacred texts (with some comparison to Christian and Muslim sacred texts), the stories about him from other Jewish sources and the rituals associated with him.

In other words: Together, we will open the door for Elijah this Passover season!
